As Li
Baodong of
China Meets
UN's Ban
Ki-moon, Blast
From the Past
By Matthew
Russell Lee
UNITED
NATIONS, July
20 -- When Li
Baodong of
China met UN
Secretary
General Ban
Ki-moon on
July 20, he
was precisely
and time and
began the
meeting by
congratulating
Ban on his
recent trip to
China. Tweeted
photo here.
Vine
here.
Then Ban's
security
ushered the
Press out, Vine here - more mildly then
they ousted it
on February 19
(audio
here) and
evicted its
long time
office on
April 14 (video
here).
Along
with Li
Baodong,
previously
China's
Permanent
Representative
to the UN, was
his Political
Coordinator at
that time, and
his successor
as Perm Rep
Liu Jieyi, who
asked the
Press, How is
everything?
Accompanying
Ban were his
Kim Won-soo,
Miroslav Jenca
and Edmond
Mulet, who
introduced
himself to Li
Baodong. Jan
Eliasson was
coming down
the hall
saying, He is
my friend.
After
the meeting as
Li Baodong
left, he
greeted Inner
City Press and
was then asked
about the Next
Secretary
General
process and
the Democratic
People's
Republic of
Korea
launches, to
both of which
he said,
smiling,
“That's up to
member
states.”
Ban's Office
of the
Spokesperson -
lead spokesman
Stephane
Dujarric seems
to be away -
should be
putting out a
read-out; for
the Czech
foreign
minister photo
op Inner City
Press covered
on July 19,
the read-out
mentioned
Syria and
climate change
but not
Turkey.
Officials who
have come to
speak at the
High Level
Political
Forum ask to
meet with Ban
Ki-moon. Or is
it more than
that? What can
Ban say about
accountability
for the two
Chines
peacekeepers
killed in
Juba, by most
accounts by
shelling by an
SPLA goverment
tank? Watch
this site.
Footnote:
beyond the
hypocrisy of
Ban Ki-moon's
eviction of
Inner City
Press, see obfuscation
letter by USG
Cristina
Gallach
claiming an
altercation
that video
shows never
took place,
which has left
it confined to
minders
anytime it
covers
meetings like
the HLPF,
there is the
matter of
temperature.
Ban Ki-moon
announced that
to save energy
thermostats
would be
turned up in
the UN. Down
in the second
basement, and
in the “focus
booth” that
Inner City
Press is now
confined to
use after its
long time
office was
given to a
media which
never comes in
or asks
questions, it
is sweltering.
But up on 38,
the air
conditioning
is working
fine: cold,
even. It's
Ban's (un)
Cool UN.
