Man Who Threatened Asian-American NYPD Officer Is Jailed For Photos With Guns As Felon

By Matthew Russell Lee, Patreon
BBC - Guardian UK - Honduras - ESPN

EDNY COURTHOUSE, June 25– A man is detained in Brooklyn on Texas gun charges. But that's only half the story.

The man, Shermaine Laster, has filmed this month threatening and insulting an Asian-American NYPD officer in Washington Square Park.

The detention hearing, before Magistrate Judge Lois Bloom in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York, was live tweeted by Inner City Press, here:

Laster's lawyer: People post things on social media for all sorts of reasons.

Judge: We don't have here the people who have gotten orders of protection against Mr. Laster.

Laster's lawyer: Maybe they never saw the posts.

Judge: In all the photos I have, he's in that "I Can't Breathe" shirt. And with the guns. AUSA: There are more photos. I am not arguing that he owns all the guns. But that he has possessed them.

Judge: Why didn't you submit them? AUSA: I can email them.

Judge calls 15 minute break to consider photos.

14 minutes into the 15 minutes break, it's announced that 11 photos have been printed out and provided to the defendant. He tries to speak- but nope. Now the matter is put over to Monday- and defendant will remain detained. Inner City Press will stay on the case
