UNITED
NATIONS, March 21 --
The Kingdom of the
Netherlands,
president of the UN
Security Council for
March, was slated on
March 21 to plant a
tree on the UN's
North Lawn with
Secretary General
Antonio Guterres,
who previously
pantomimed the
planting of a
cypress tree from
Lebanon on the Lawn.
But
amid a snow storm in
New York, the Dutch
tree event was moved
indoors to the UN
Security Council
stakeout. Inner City
Press streamed
Periscope of the
set-up,
here, and of
the event itself, to
the end, here.
Guterres
had a prepared
speech, handed to
him by a staffer,
which twice referred
to “grassroots,” had
a no longer apt
reference to getting
his hands dirty, and
peaked with the
observation that
trees die standing
up - with dignity.
(This from the head
of an organization
which physically
removed the
investigative Press
for pursuing the Ng
Lap Seng UN bribery
story into the UN
Press Briefing Room,
audio here
with UN Security
grabbing the
Periscope phone and
saying, Now you are
a trespasser. No
response since, to this.
- Inner City Press
still restricted, no
place to work,
minders required.)
After
Guterres' speech and
a photo op (Inner
City Press' Alamy

in front of the
picture of a tree,
Guterres was led
surrounded by
security to the
lobby in front of
the Security
Council, where he
delivered positive
remarks about the
Netherlands' time on
the Security
Council.
When he was
ushered upstairs -
no other questions
allowed, for example
on the UN's inaction
and/or failure on
Myanmar, Yemen,
Syria, Cameroon and
elsewhere - UK
Deputy Ambassador
Jonathan Allen did
the same, then
Sweden's Deputy Carl
Skau. While some
might call it a snow
job, you be the
judge: Periscope
