NEW YORK, SDNY,
May 21 – When the
International Monetary Fund
held its biweekly embargoed
media briefing on May 21,
Inner City Press submitted
questions including on China
and Zambia, which IMF
Spokesperson Gerry Rice
answered.
Inner City Press asked, "what
is the IMF's prognosis and
advice in large debts to China
and whether China can or
should collect them at this
time? Does the IMF know the
terms of China's forbearance,
for example, with the Kyrgyz
Republic?"
IMF spokesperson Rice said,
Matthew Lee in New York, thank
you for the question... We
welcome China's support to the
CCRT [the Catastrophe
Containment And Relief Trust].
He did not
directly answer about
Kyrgyzstan, but also read out
Inner City Press' question on
Zambia:
"On Zambia, what
is the status of talks and
does the country's level of
debt make it impossible or
less likely to receive an IMF
facility? Zambia's Fin Min
says it has applied to the
IMF for a
COVID-19-related rapid credit
facility; its external debt
stock jumped to 45% of gross
domestic product (GDP) in
2019, up from 37% in the
previous year."
Rice said Zambia has spoken of
restructuring its debt; he
used the phrase "a way can be
found." Does it involve China?
At least the IMF answers Press
questions about China. We'll
have more on this - watch this
site.
