NEW YORK, SDNY,
June 10 – When the
International Monetary Fund
held its biweekly embargoed
media briefing on June 4,
Inner City Press submitted
questions including on Sudan,
which IMF Spokesperson Gerry
Rice answered, see below.
Now on June
10, the IMF on Guatemala
issued this: "The IMF
Executive Board approved
Guatemala’s request for
emergency financial assistance
of about US$ 594 million to
help the country meet the
urgent balance of payments
needs stemming from the
COVID-19 pandemic. The funds
will provide timely resources
to counter the economic and
social impact of the pandemic
and catalyze additional
support from other development
partners. The Guatemalan
authorities have taken swift
and comprehensive measures to
contain the spread of the
virus and to mitigate its
economic impact."
Inner City
Press has asked the IMF, "on
corruption, what are the IMF's
thoughts on Honduras in light
of the conviction of the
President's brother for drug
trafficking, evidence of
campaign contributions from El
Chapo, and assassination of
witnesses and evidence-givers
since?" And it has asked the
UN, "On Honduras, immediately
explain the basis of SG
Guterres' May 21 statement
about 85,000 COVID-19 tests to
Honduras - there, people tell
Inner City Press free tests
have not arrived but the
government is selling them for
$250."
Back
on June 4 Inner City Press
asked, "On Sudan, what is the
status - ot's reported Sudan
is seeking its first IMF
program since 2014. Agreeing
the non-financial initiative
in June talks and persuading
the U.S. to drop its
long-standing listing of Sudan
as a state sponsor of
terrorism are key planks of
the plan, FinMin El-Badawi
said."
IMF spokesperson Rice said,
Matthew Lee in New York, Inner
City Press, thank you for the
question... He confirmed,
largely, and referring to
COVID-19 in Sudan. Full answer
on video here.
