UNITED
NATIONS, May
22 -- The UN
Department of
Peacekeeping
Operations
under
Herve
Ladsous,
the fourth
Frenchman in a
row to hold
the post, is
almost always
a day late,
and a dollar
(or Euro)
short.
Back
on Friday,
May 17,
Inner City
Press asked
the UN:
Inner
City Press: I
have some
questions
about Syria,
but I want to
be sure
to get one in
about Darfur
before turning
to that. The
JEM [Justice
and Equality
Movement]
rebels there
say that
Chadian troops
have
crossed the
border into
Sudan and also
that the
Chadian air
force had
bombed their
positions
inside Darfur.
Is that
something that
UNAMID
either can
confirm or is
trying to
confirm?
Deputy
Spokesperson
Del Buey: I’ll
have to check
with the
mission.
Fully
five days
later --
despite Del
Buey telling
Inner City
Press this is
not the era of
letters
traveling by
boats, that
Ban Ki-moon
can
remain in
charge of and
responsible
for the UN as
he travels
through
the Democratic
Republic of
Congo and
press
crackdowns in
Uganda --
this was
provided and
is published
here in full

In
response to
your recent
question on
reports of the
Chadian air
force
bombing
positions
inside Darfur
and on whether
Chadian troops
have
crossed into
Sudan:
On
18 May, a
patrol from
the joint
African
Union-United
Nations
mission
conducted an
assessment
mission to
Bamina, North
Darfur, where
an
attack on
Justice and
Equality
Movement-Sudan
members took
place. No
military or
armed elements
were observed
in the area.
So
was JEM lying?
Or was the UN
late? Watch
