EDNY
CLERK OF COURT, March 17 -- As
Russia's war on Ukraine dragged on - in
the social media age, three weeks were
like three years - companies and law
firms to protect their reputation pulled
out of Russia and Russia cases.
Michael
Randall Long had gotten tired of waiting
for his Gorbachev - Larry Ray gambit to
bear fruit in the barren United Nations.
So he returned to the Eastern Front - to
the EDNY Clerk's Office, looking for a
way in.
"We could intervene," he told
Kurt. "This white shoe law firm, they've
made a motion to withdraw as counsel for
a Russian bank defending itself from a
lawsuit about the Malaysia plane shot
down over Donbas."
The
other Eastern Front.
"The
judge doesn't want to let them out. But
we could intervene, and put in our
motion the information that we gave to
the UN and Guterres and what they did
with it."
The
idea seemed OK to Kurt. In the lull of
the Larry Ray trial he was bouncing from
case to case in SDNY - the sentencing of
a wannabe Taliban to 96 months, the VOSR
proceeding as a sad sack defendant he'd
covered before now deceased Judge Pauley
may he rest in peace - and a trip to
EDNY sounded good. Especially with the
sweetener Long was offering.
"I know you've been asking me to
sue the UN, like, since I met you. And
you know all the downsides, the
impunity, the rest. But maybe this is a
way to do it. Through intervening in the
Russia case, and putting in to 'don't
call it a war' email from Melissa
Fleming's Department." Long paused. "If
we get the right judge."
"A
dollar and a dream," Kurt said. That's
what it used to cost to ride the subway
to Cadman Plaza. Now it was $2.75. He'd
take Citibike instead, even as Citibank
stayed on in Russia, doubling down like
Jho Low at the baccarat table at the
Las Vegas Venetian losing $1.75
million while defendant Roger Ng lost
"only" $22,500.

Kurt had first heard
of Jho Low while still in
the UN, before he was thrown
out. Jho Low appeared at a
UN press conference in front
of the ubiquitous and now
defiled logo.
