SDNY COURTHOUSE,
Dec 29 -- It's done, and it is
published. Ghislaine Maxwell guilty on five of
six counts, and the book "Maximum Maxwell" the
same day available here
Already Kurt had learned that
another SDNY trial, set for jury selection
on Monday, January 3, was being postponed
or canceled. But Judge Nathan said this
one would accelerate - but without any
public call-in phone line. Kurt spoke
about it in the morning, and tweeted out
it (and Leah Saffian) all day.
Just as some came to the defense of
Prince Andrew the day before, about his
doxing, so some defended Saffian and her
rush from gallery to defense table,
sharing her smart phone with Ghislaine.
Kurt stuck his guns and wrote a story.
Then he called in and covered a criminal
case in EDNY in Brooklyn.
It was nearly 5 pm when the lawyers
began to assemble in Courtroom 318. Kurt
thought it could be another note, or the
jurors asking to go home at 5 pm instead
of 6. But then he got the message:"A
verdict has been reached in US vs.
Maxwell, 20-cr-330 (AJN)... Please be
advised that a verdict has been reached in
the above matter. The verdict will be
announced in open court shortly."
Kurt started a new thread and got
ready. Judge Nathan came out and said if
anyone made noise, they would be removed
from the courtroom. Duly noted. Then the
jurors entered, and Judge Nathan opened
the envelope they had sent here. She read
it out loud:
Only
one charge was she found not guilty on:
"COUNT TWO: Enticement of an Individual
Under the Age of 17 (Jane only) to Travel
with Intent to Engage in Illegal Sexual
Activity."And that as Kurt had reported
concerned Maxwell's role in Jane's flight
leaving New Mexico, but not the one on the
way there, to engage in illegal sexual
activity. Would it make any difference in
the sentencing?
After
the verdict it was all over quickly.
Unlike most other cases they did not pick
a sentencing date, leaving that to later
letters, sure to be docketed late if at
all. By then Judge Nathan might be on the
Second Circuit, to which Bobbi Sternheim
in the cold outside the courthouse said
they would be appealing. She was driven
away in one car, and Kurt did a final live
stream, on his own and then other
platforms. There would be other trials,
for sure. But this had been Maximum
Maxwell, made minimal by choice. Kurt
would resist this, and demand access to
the UN, and for the public to the courts.
And an end or at least spotlight on
impunity, at the UN and beyond. #MaximumMaxwell.
