SDNY COURTHOUSE, Jan 5 -- It was a week after
the Ghislaine Maxwell guilty verdicts but the
chatty juror Scotty David was throwing it all
into chaos.
On Kurt's
way into the SDNY courthouse, he did a live
stream on Twitter predicting that Maxwell's
lawyers would soon file something with Judge
Nathan demanding a new trial, based on Scotty
not having disclosed his history of sexual
abuse.
But that stream froze up and people told
Kurt it was unviewable, he should use another
platform. And it was the prosecutors who filed
first, urging Judge Nathant to appoint a
lawyer for Juror Scotty, whose number they
didn't even give in their redacted
letter.
Kurt
figured out the number, having live tweeted
the voir dire. It was Juror 50, who was 35
years old, worked in finance and knew of
Ghislaine Maxwell before the trial.
Then Maxwell's lawyers came in with the
first of two letters, this one more than half
redacted, saying they wanted a new trial. Kurt
prepared his own letter to Judge Nathan, his
seventh, demanding the unredaction of these
letters and related documents.
But
when Judge Nathan acted, at 5 pm, she ignored
(and did not docket) the request to unredact.
She did, however, agree to appoint a
publicly-paid lawyer for Juror 50.
Kurt asked, how could she do that,
without a financial affidavit? Without knowing
if Scotty even wanted a lawyer? More here.
The underlying
case is US v. Maxwell,
20-cr-330 (Nathan).
