SDNY
COURTHOUSE, Dec 6 --
Week 2 of Maximum Maxwell began with DOJ's second victim or
survivor, to be referred to by and
pseudonym Kate.
As Maxwell's Bobbi Sternheim quickly
pointed out, Kate had testified under her
real name at the hearing Judge Richard
Berman had, after Epstein died in the MCC.
So
reverse identifying her identity would be
easy for nearly anyone, particular when
Sternheim started asking about the film
she had been in with a major British
actor, pointedly asking her if she's seen
the IMBD listing, which was on the
Internet and
searchable.
But first the government elicited
Kate story, how Ghislaine had invited her
for tea and then asked her to massage
Jeffrey, telling him and pointedly Kate
what strong hand she had, she really
should go to Oxford.
"What was he wearing?" AUSA Pomerantz
asked
Kate.
"A
robe," Kate answered.
"And under that?"
"Nothing. He was naked." And Epstein had
proceeded to have sex with her, a
seventeen year old girl.
The problem for the government was the 17
was not illegal. Still it put Maxwell in
the jury's mind, asking Kate afterward,
"How did it go? Did you have
fun?"
Disgusting, one reader
tweeted at Kurt. She should go to jail for
life.
But would
she?
Sternheim elicited that Kate had in
fact grown up in London's Belgravia
neighborhood, that her mother had
remarried well, meaning up, meaning gold
digger.
Outrageous, people tweeted. But
would the jury see it that way?
It
reminded Kurt of the Long Island drug and
prostitution gang case he'd covered before
Judge Engelmayer, with no other media
there or even interested - not even
Newsday. Had the defense there asked the
victim witness (no one insisted on call
her a survivor in that trial) why she had
done to the crack house in the first
place, or "You grew up on Long Island too,
didn't you?"
Still
and all the case had fallen apart on
venue, amid COVID, and she would have to
testify again at a second trial. Would
that happen here?
"Didn't you use drugs for ten
years?" Sternheim
demanded.
"Yes,"
Kate said. She now was a music therapist
for people with substance abuse and
trauma. Even this, Sternhem made fun
of.
"You can get a US visa for that?"
Sternheim asked. "Can any unlicensed
therapist get a US
visa?"
From the prosecutors' table:
"Objection!"
"Sustained," Judge Nathan
said.
But the jury had already heard
it.
Next came an FBI agent who had
taken photos during the search of
Epstein's mansion at 9 East 71 Street.
They had broken down the door when no one
answered, and taken photos of the massage
room on the third floor, and a drawer of
DVDs. #MaximumMaxwell.
The defense had turned
it into a freak show by getting Judge
Nathan to order that every photograph
inside the photographs be redacted. So
there was black squares on every wall, and
on the forest of picture frames on the
table.
The
framed photos seemed to depict the big
shots Epstein had, perhaps lining up with
the DVDs. Might the UN's Antonio Guterres
be among them, given his representation on
Maxwell's Terramar Project board?
This Kurt would aim to find out, as early
as Dec 8 which would be Day 7 of the
trial. Guterres would be a guest of honor,
not (only) at an Upper East Side
townhouse, but now at Ciprianis at 25 Wall
Street. How very charitable. How very
UN.
Then there were bank documents, JP Morgan
Chase involved in a $7 million transfer
with Epstein and Maxwell, and the purchase
of a helicopter. Where had all of
Epstein's money come from, beyond the
hedge or hush fund from Les Wexner?
This,
like Guterres and the UN, would be a case
for Kurt. Maximum Marlowe, it might be
called. Philip Marlowe, but now with a
live-streaming smart phone.
