UNITED NATIONS,
October 31, updated – Three
hours after at least eight
people were killed in Lower
Manhattan, at the UN on 42nd
Street the Security Council
was meeting, the end of an all
day debate on Children and
Armed Conflict. At the end
Armenia, Israel and then
Council President France,
though its Deputy Ambassador
Anne Gueguen: nothing about
the killings, now nearly four
hours before. Periscope here.
The Council routinely
“condemns in the strongest
terms” terrorist attacks. From
Washington, this: “From WH
Press Sec Sarah Sanders: The
President has been briefed on
the incident in NYC by CoS
Kelly and will be continually
updated as more details are
known. Our Thoughts and
prayers are with all those
affected.” Then from Israel's
Mission to the UN: “Israel's
Ambassador to the United
Nations Danny Danon expressed
his condolences to US
Ambassador Nikki Haley
following the terror attack in
New York: 'Just as the US has
always stood by our side in
our times of need, Israel will
always stand with America in
the fight against
terror. We send our
condolences to the families of
those killed and we wish a
speedy recovery to those
injured.” As it approached 7
pm, from the UNSC, nothing.
Then at 7, Secretary General
Antonio Guterres with this:
"Our hearts go out to the
people of our great host city;
today all of us at UNHQ are
New Yorkers." Meaning UN
staff? Or those running the
Security Council in UNHQ? Then
the US State Department said,
"The State Department is
closely monitoring the
situation. We are referring
all questions about the
investigation to the FBI and
the New York Police
Department. We extend
our condolences to the
families of the victims and
our prayers for recovery to
those affected by this
terrible act of terrorism in
New York City." Watch this
