NYS COURTHOUSE,
May 5 – Amid the Coronavirus
pandemic, the New York County
Criminal Court on May 5 Kevin
Williams, charged with murder
in the second degree, was
presented by video.
In the courtroom at 100 Centre
Street, Inner City Press was
not only the only media - its
reporter was the only person
in the gallery which has seven
rows of wooden benches with
some profanity and gang names
carved into them.
The big
screen TV was not facing the
gallery, but Williams' and his
defense lawyer's answers, and
ambient holding cell sounds
behind them, were very
audible. His lawyer said he
will not have a cross grand
jury notice.
Williams
asked to speak. He said there
had been problems with the
audio when he spoke with his
lawyer.
The judge
cautioned him not to speak
now, until he spoke further
with his lawyer, that as the
Miranda warning has it,
anything could be used against
him.
The Assistant
District Attorney sought
remand, meaning continued
detention, saying that
Williams was part of group
that chased and kicked the
victim, who was stabbed. She
said Williams was involved in
a robbery in July 2019, stole
from a delivery person.
Williams'
lawyer emphasized his young
age and that he has roots in
New York. The
judge found risk of flight,
given the seriousness of the
charges, and set the next date
for June 5 in Part 19, for
grand jury action. The case is
CR 009 358 20
NY.
Minutes earlier a
defendant named Jose Gonzalez
pleaded guilty in exchange for
a time served sentence for
petit larceny, "to whit,"
stealing to coffee makers from
a store at 1235 Lexington
Avenue which through the
crackly audio he insisted was
NOT a Walgreens. [A Google
Maps search
finds it's a Duane Reade,
named after streets in lower
Manhattan.]
The
judge vacated a warrant in his
Bronx case 2019 BX 009 204,
advising him to show up there
on August 3 at 9:30 am in 18-3
or there would be another
warrant for his arrest and
bail "might" be required. And
so it goes. Inner City Press
mostly covers the SDNY Federal
Court one block away, but it
was time to check out 100
Centre. Watch this site.
