SDNY COURTHOUSE,
July 22– Jevaun Charles and
others are charged in a
narcotics conspiracy, with
guns.
On
June 29, U.S. District Court
for the Southern District of
New York Judge Jed S. Rakoff
held a proceeding. Inner City
Press covered it.
Judge
Rakoff had set it up in order
to give the many defense
counsel the chance to approve
or reject proposed dates for
arraignments.
When they paused,
Judge Rakoff said he could
just choose a date. Finally
July 7 at noon was
selected.
Defense
counsel pushed for a delay to
January or February 2022 to
file motions. Judge Rakoff
said that was far too long.
There are Title
III wiretaps, jail calls,
evidence of controlled buys,
the AUSA said.
On July 22 Judge
Rakoff held a requested bond
hearing on Jevaun Charles. It
emerged that Charles, detained
in Essex, has not been
vaccinated.
Judge
Rakoff mused whether he should
consider this, under the Bail
Reform Act, as a danger to the
community - or if getting
vaccinated in a week could be
a condition of release. As it
was it was academic - Charles
was not released.
The case is US v.
Charles, et al., 21-cr-412
