In Canosa Case Against Weinstein Talk of No Back Delay of NY Trial and 2 More International Probes

By Matthew Russell Lee, Patreon
BBC - Guardian UK - Honduras - The Source

SDNY COURTHOUSE, Dec 12 – The case of Alexandra Canosa against Harvey Weinstein for sexual assaults has stalled, with depositions including of Weinstein himself put off until thirty days after the end of the New York State criminal trial of Weinstein.

On December 12 U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York Judge Paul A. Engelmayer asked the lawyers for Weinstein and separately for the Weinstein Companies about the criminal case, and about the bankruptcy proceeding and rumored "global settlement" of sexual claims against Weinstein.

Karen Bitar for the Weinstein Companies relayed that the state criminal trial is set to begin on January 6, despite Weinstein unveiling a back injury he says is from a car accident during the summer.

Canosa's lawyer Thomas Guiffra expressed doubt about the back injury; Judge Engelmayer said that matter is certainly not before him.

But he asked about the global settlement, saying he'd read about it in the newspaper and asking to be kept informed, including of any confidential developments -- which will be redacted as to the public.

Weinstein's own lawyer Philip Byler said he has heard of "investigations in two different countries and another jurisdiction." The difference between a country and a jurisdiction remains to be seen.

Byler asked Judge Engelmayer if he would be memorializing all the dates, for depositions and the like, in a minute order. Judge Engelmayer told him he is responsible for what is said in open court. The case is Canosa v. Weinstein et al., 18-cv-04115 (Engelmayer).
