SDNY COURTHOUSE,
June 24 – Derek Ortiz Socias
is charged with meth
distribution. He moved to
dismiss based on the allegedly
discriminatory composition of
the jury.
His
Federal Defender wrote, "the
grand jury that indicted Mr.
Ortiz Socias was drawn from
pool where approximately
one-third of expected Latino
people and one-quarter of the
expected Black people were
missing."
On June 23, U.S. District
Court for the Southern
District of New York Judge
Lewis J. Liman held a
proceeding. Inner City Press
covered it.
Judge
Liman ran through applicable
Second Circuit precedent, and
settled on the absolute
disparity method.
Applying it, he
upheld the indictment. He set
the next proceeding for
October 7 at 2 pm.
The case is US
v. Ortiz Socia,
21-cr-173 (Liman)
