SDNY COURTHOUSE,
April 10 –
Lequan Eley, facing a sentence
of 210 months if convicted, on
April 10 sought release from
the Metropolitan Correctional
Center in lower Manhattan.
U.S.
District Court for the
Southern District of the New
York Judge Ronnie Abrams asked
his lawyer, He would go back
to the woman he has
[allegedly]
strangled? Always
(over) prepared Assistant US
Attorney Thomas John Wright
cited to drug sales in the
lobby of 1225 Sheridan Avenue
in The Bronx, to which he
seeks release.
Inner City Press notes that
more affluent inmates these
deals propose to judges
other places to live.
AUSA then cited SDNY Judge
Kaplan's March 31 decision in
US v. Espinal, 17-cr-791, that
risk of release "might well be
enhanced by law enforcement
[agencies] are severely
stretched by the present
emergency." He cited the UN,
too.
The UN gym is
open, contrary to New York
law, Inner City Press scoop
here.
Eley's lawyer Galluzzo says
it's wrong to equate medical
care in the MCC prison with
that out in NYC at large,
calls the MCC a Petri dish, as
did another defense lawyer
earlier today, here.
Galluzzo
confirms that he was told his
client is NOT on BOP's
vulnerable list, as given to
him by the Federal Defenders.
He is trying to get him on the
list, as having asthma.
Questions are
being raised about this
list, including the accuracy
with which it's conveyed
Judge
Abrams: Although the court is
concerned, there are no
combination of conditions...
I'm very concerned he was
convicted of strangling his
girlfriend until she lost
consciousness. Again in 2019,
he strangled her with a towel,
allegedly. She cited a surge
of domestic violence.
Also, he's here on a writ from
the state system, which might
put him back into custody. The
bail application is denied.
The case is US v. Eley,
20-cr-171 (Abrams).
