SDNY Murky Mag Court Sidebar on
Man With 500 Grams Whom US Wants
to Talk With
By Matthew
Russell Lee
SDNY COURTHOUSE,
Oct 23 – While
many or even
most cases in
the
Magistrates
Court of the U.S.
District Court
for the
Southern
District of
New York are
sealed or have
case numbers
given only
later, on October 23 before
Magistrate
Judge Debra
Freeman a
defendant was
ordered
remanded even
as the docket
number Inner
City Press was
when it
requested
given for him
showed up as
"cannot find
case" in PACER
two hours
later. When
Inner City
Press walked
into the Mag
court, from a
closing
argument it
was not
allowed to
report in real
time, the
response from
the bench was
"Counsel,
approach for a
minute."
While
not knowing
what was said
- no basis for
the sealing
was publicly
given -
reference was
made to the
government
wanting to
talk with the
defendant. So
is he a
cooperator? A
potential
cooperator?
In an
abundance of
caution, Inner
City Press is
not for now
publishing his
name. Just
outside his
house he had
$130,000 in
cash and 400
to 500 grams
of narcotics.
Yeah, sounds
like an SDNY
cooperator...
Last
week as it
covered in
real time an
11 year
sentence for a
Brooklyn
defendant,
Jamel Jones,
Inner City
Press was
subject to an
"incident
report." Here.
While loving
the beat, and
respecting the
law, inquires
have been
made, and now
followed up.
