SDNY COURTHOUSE,
Nov 1 –
Ray Vela came to be sentenced
on November 1, facing a 12 to
18 months sentencing
guideline. He went to the
bathroom outside the
courtroom, his lawyer said.
And then he was gone.
U.S.
District Court for the
Southern District of New York
Judge Lewis J. Liman left the
bench for a moment then
returned and asked the lawyer,
Lorraine Gauli-Rufo, if her
client was now present for
sentencing.
No, she
said, she had gone out to
check the bathroom and he was
not there.
The
Assistant US Attorney asked
that a bench warrant be
issued, and that the Court
Security Officers be told.
Vela's bail was revoked.
Inner City Press ran up
to Judge Liman's courtroom -
the remote access was
appreciated - and asked if
Vela had come back. No, was
the answer.
He's in the
wind...
Charges against
him have included stealing
$80,000 in forged checks,
harassment and "attempting to
flee from the police while
carrying a bag of the drug
K2."
The case is US v.
Vela, 20-cr-607 (Liman)
