SDNY COURTHOUSE,
May 12 –
Yajaira Saaverdra was in her
family's restaurant La Morada
at 308 Willis Avenue in the
South Bronx on January 11,
2019 when NYPD officers tried
to conduct a narcotics
surveillance operation there.
She
protested - exercising her
First Amendment rights - and
was handcuffed and placed
under arrest. She sued.
On May 12 U.S.
District Court for the
Southern District of New York
Judge Jesse M. Furman held a
conference in the case. Inner
City Press, which has long
covered the Bronx and Willis
Avenue in particular covered
it.
The
issues largely concerned
identifying all of the NYPD
officers involved. The
plaintiff's lawyer said she is
not a fan of virtual
depositions and hopes that
conditions in New York City
will allow for in-person
depositions soon.
Judge Furman, after being
dropped off the call by cell
phone, ruled that expert
discovery should end by
January 9, 2021, while a
pretrial conference is listed
for November 17, 2020.
The case is
Saavedra v. City of New York,
et al., 19-cv-7491
(Furman).
