Man Indicted For Mexico Drugs in 2009 Reappears in 2020 Before Judge Chin CIPA Qs

By Matthew Russell Lee, Patreon
BBC - Guardian UK - Honduras - The Source

SDNY COURTHOUSE, Aug 3 – Rigoberto Renteria-Andrade was indicted in 2009 for importing drugs from Mexico was indicted.

On August 3 U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York Judge sitting by designation Denny Chin, now on the 2d Circuit, held a proceeding on a new hard-drive, said he's set a deadline. After 11 years? Inner City Press live tweeted it.

Judge Chin asks if in-person criminal proceeding are taking place.  AUSA says some, though not normal or "routine" conferences.

Judge Chin: Any objection to doing in October by phone? None.

Renteria is in Westchester County Jail. Since he was indicted in 2009, how long as he been there?

Judge Chin: "There may be classified materials... I do have one law clerk who is cleared, but leaving in six weeks. No incoming clerk who's cleared. Needed?"

Judge Chin: I have clearance, and can always look at material myself, just depends on the volume. Defense lawyer Charbrowe does not have clearance.

AUSA: If the case is not resolved short of trial, there will be CIPA litigation for sure. But it's not voluminous.  "We could do an in-person Section II if that's something your Honor is interested in...We will be seeking only ex parte review, and would not ask defense counsel to apply for clearance."

Chabrowe: I'm going to start applying for clearance, regardless.

The case is USA v. Renteria-Andrade et al., 09-cr-909 (Chin)
