SDNY COURTHOUSE,
May 4 – Alphonso Syville says
he was assaulted on July 2,
2019 by NYC Department of
Homeless Services officers at
the Jack Ryan Homeless Shelter
for single adult men. He sued
pro se and on May 4 had
a proceeding before U.S.
District Court for the
Southern District of New York
Magistrate Judge Debra C.
Freeman. Inner City Press
covered it.
Judge Freeman was
solicitous, telling Syville
that during this time of
Coronavirus pandemic if he had
no other ways he could leave a
voice mail at her chambers;
she had not received his mail
and his papers could not be
filed in person at the
courthouse.
Syville
asked repeated how he could
get a lawyer.
Judge Freeman
explained that while criminal
defendants are guaranteed
representation, in civil
matters it only happens is
someone volunteers. She
committed to keep trying.
There were discussions of
settlement offers being made -
something that hard nose
California employers lawyers
later on May 4 threatened
Inner City Press for
reporting, here.
This case is
Syville v. City of New York,
et al., 19-cv-9988 (Caproni /
Freeman).
