SDNY COURTHOUSE,
June 15 – In May
2020 Christopher Nelson's
assigned counsel Inga L.
Parsons with her office
address in Marblehead,
Massachusetts soughts his
release on bail amid COVID-19
from U.S. District Court for
the Southern District of New
York Judge Valerie E. Caproni.
Judge
Caproni denied release,
finding that "while Mr. Nelson
does have asthma, the record
suggests that the condition is
not serios, and given that he
is 28-years old, he is at a
lower risk of complications
relative to defendant that
this Court has released due to
COVID-19."
Nelson soon
thereafter sought to replace
Parsons with a new counsel.
Parsons wrote in, "Counsel is
presently out of town in
Wyoming but available for a
remove hearing at the Court's
convenience." Judge Caproni
held a proceeding on June 15.
Inner City Press covered
it.
Judge
Caproni informed Nelson that
while he could make this
change, he might not be able
to make another one - would he
like to think about it?
He replied that
he had thought about it for a
while, and wanted to make a
change. He made a point of
saying the Parsons is a nice
person, just didn't seem to
have enough time.
Judge
Caproni reminded him that all
CJA lawyers - all lawyers, in
fact - have multiple clients.
But substitution was ordered.
The case is
US v. Nelson, 19-cr-862
(Caproni).
