SDNY COURTHOUSE,
Oct 1 – Elizabeth Achan
was a bookkeeper at a business
in The Bronx when in 2015 she
began paying herself in the
name and social security
number of a retired
employee.
Later the
IRS confronted the retiree for
not paying tax on the payments
they had never received. Achan
was arrested and pled not
guilty.
On October
1 U.S. District Court for the
Southern District of New York
Judge Laura Taylor Swain held
a change of plea proceeding.
Inner City Press covered
it.
The
allocution was not as smooth
as it might have been. Judge
Swain asked Achan if she had
known to whom the money she
stole should have gone.
Her lawyer cut in
it say the allocution was
already sufficient and that
could be dealt with at
sentencing. The case is US v.
Achan, 20-cr-87 (Swain)
