SDNY COURTHOUSE,
July 7 – Incarcerated
defendant Carlos Parrales, or
initially his wife, sought the
ouster of lawyer Howard
Greenberg as his counsel,
after a dispute about arson
and a lack of phone calls.
On July 7 U.S.
District Court for the
Southern District of New York
Judge Edgardo Ramos held a
proceeding on it. Inner City
Press covered it.
Judge Ramos asked Greenberg
what the problem was.
Greenberg launched into a
speech how of course
defendants who don't like the
outcome blame the lawyer. He
said it all started when
Parrales, out on pre-trial
release, was remanded for
arson.
Greenberg said he
told Parrales' wife that her
husband had only himself to
blame. Now he found himself
being replaced. He
wanted it know that he "never
threw in the towel."
Judge Ramos
asked that AUSA Nicholas
Chiuchiolo be put in "time
out" and not listen.
Then Parrales
spoke, saying that Greenberg
rarely called him and that he
wanted another lawyer.
CJA
panelist Zachary
Margulis-Ohnuma was on the
call, although the CJA
affidavit was not yet in
place. "Carlos, I'll call
you," he said, wisely.
The case is USA
v. Parrales, 19-cr-663 (Ramos)
