SDNY COURTHOUSE,
May 14 – Thomas Sanders was
indicted in 2004 along with
Julian Chopurian in a
narcotics conspiracy.
Chopurian
pleaded guilty in 2006 and was
sentenced to 18 months
imprisonment.
Sanders was
arrested and detained on March
2, 2021 - seventeen years
later.
On March
26, U.S. District Court for
the Southern District of New
York Judge Victor Marrero held
a proceeding. Inner City Press
covered it. Sauders remained
detained, and another
conference was set for May 14.
Inner City Press covered that
one as well.
The defense is
invoking the Speedy Trial Act;
Judge Marrero mused that being
on the lam for 17 years tends
to waive that. He excluded
time, over the defense's
objection, to June 18. Some
evidence, it seems, is hard to
find after all this time.
The case is USA
v. Sanders, 04-cr-1230
(Marrero)
