SDNY COURTHOUSE,
March 25 – Jared Searles
pleaded guilty to having
robbed a taxi driver in The
Bronx on April 17, 2019.
On March
24, U.S. District Court for
the Southern District of New
York Judge George B. Daniels
held his sentencing. Inner
City Press covered it.
The issues
included whether having made
the cab driver walk away from
his car, the length of two
buildings, should trigger the
four level enhancement for
abduction. Judge Daniels found
this to be the case.
The US
Attorney's Office included in
its sentencing memo reference
to new criminal conduct in the
MCC - but redacted the rest of
the paragraph, and the
accompanying footnote, without
any explanation. (There is a
history of inappropriate
redactions, addressed here.)
Searles' lawyer said that his
criminal history was
overstated, that if the case
had remained in the New York
State system his client would
already be out.
As it was,
on a guideline of 120 to 150
months, Searles was sentenced
to 48 months and three years
of supervised release.
The case is US v.
Searles, 19-cr-381 (Daniels)
