SDNY COURTHOUSE,
May 26 –
Yamill Irizarry-Santana was
arrested on May 26, and
appeared that afternoon before
U.S. District Court for the
Southern District of New York
Magistrate Judge Ona T. Wang.
Inner City Press live tweeted
it. Irizarry was in the cell
block with the U.S. Marshals.
His Federal
Defender Martin Cohen spoke to
him by phone. The arrest took
place at 9 am in the morning
for an alleged violation of
sex offender registration.
AUSA David
Robles says Irizarry was an
"absconder." Says, "the
pandemic is serious, but the
defendant is a risk of flight
and danger to the community.
He's 33 and not in high risk
category."
Judge Wang:
For defendants brought in, is
it still the process to
quarantine for 2 weeks?
AUSA Robles: I
don't want to
misspeak...
Judge Wang: My
other concern is if Mr.
Irizarry is released with
electronic monitoring, he
doesn't have a domicile
Probation officer: He would be
directed to self-quarantine
before we could install the
equipment. And the locations
they're giving, he hasn't been
there for over a month.
FD: I meant he intends to go
there.
Probation:
He would have to go to intake
first.
Judge Wang
took a break and has just
returned. She said Irizarry
should be detained.
And he was,
unliked an allege PPE price
gouger later in the day. This
case is US v. Irizarry,
15-cr-329 (Furman /
Wang).
