SDNY COURTHOUSE,
Aug 12 – Alfredo Garcia was
arrested on May 28, 2020 in
possession of heroin and
fentanyl. He was not detained,
but his passport was taken
away. On July 9 he
reapplied for a passport,
saying he had lost his in taxi
- and using this surprisingly
quickly obtained passport
tried to leave the US to the
Dominican Republic on August
10, authorities say. He was
arrested. On
August 11 U.S. District Court
for the Southern District of
New York Magistrate Judge Ona
T. Wang held a proceeding.
Inner City Press covered
it. An Assistant
US Attorney argued for
detention, emphasizing the
risk of flight. But Garcia's
Federal Defender said it was
all a misunderstanding, the
Garcia has family in the
Dominican
Republic. Judge
Wang took a break, for a
non-public discussion with Pre
Trial Services. Then she
released Garcia on $50,000
bond, to self-install location
monitoring equipment. The
order went into PACER on
August 12. The case is US v.
Garcia, 20-mj-8453 (Wang).
