SDNY COURTHOUSE,
July 1 – Amara Cherif was
indicted in the U.S. District
Court for the Southern
District of New York as part
of a conspiracy to traffic in
rhinoceros horns and elephant
ivory, and to launder money.
He is a
citizen of Guinea, but was
arrested in and extradited to
New York from
Senegal.
On July 1 SDNY
Judge Gregory H. Woods held a
telephone conference in the
case. Inner City Press covered
and tweeted it, here.
Cherif is
detained in the Essex County
Jail in New Jersey. There, he
cannot see his assigned lawyer
in person, but rather only by
video hook-up from the Federal
Defenders of New Jersey. He
has complaints about his
initial interpreter, saying
he'd prefer one from
Guinea.
Judge Woods
set a schedule for the case,
with the next conference in
September.
The case is US v.
Cherif, 19-cr-338
(Wood).
