SDNY COURTHOUSE,
Sept 1– Jaquan Angevine was
charged in 2017 with identity
theft and bank fraud.
He was on
Supervised Release, and on
June 16 appeared before U.S.
District Court for the
Southern District of New York
Judge Paul A. Engelmayer on
alleged violations of
supervised release. Inner City
Press covered it, below.
While
Judge Engelmayer made threats
of remand, by July Angevine
was the subject of a now
unsealed indictment for bail
jumping. He was arrested in
Connecticut and on September 1
appeared before SDNY
Magistrate Judge James L.
Cott. Inner City Press covered
it.
This time
Angevine was remanded, on
consent, and both of his cases
have been transferred to SDNY
District Judge Gregory H.
Woods.
Previously, Judge
Engelmayer provided notice in
advance, "the Court may order
Mr. Angevine's immediate
remand."
When it began,
Judge Engelmayer said, I
understand, Mr. Angevine, you
will be pleading guilty to a
number of violations today.
But first you will plead not
guilty. Mr. Smallman, will you
please put Mr. Angevine under
oath? [It was done.]
How do you
plead?
Not
guilty.
Judge
Engelmayer's June 3 Order said
a photo obtained by Probation
"indicated that Mr. Angevine
was at an outdoor bar, which
is forbidden under the terms
of supervised release."
He asks the
AUSA, What is the
agreement?
The AUSA
answered, Plead to 6, 8, 9 and
11 and we dismiss the
rest.
Angevine: I
wasn't driving with a license.
I was around people I should
never have been around.
Judge Engelmayer:
Did you go through the red
light?
Angevine:
Yes.
Judge Engelmayer:
And forced license and
checks?
Angevine: In the
car, but not in my
possession. Judge
Engelmayer: Did you know if
violated the terms of your
supervised release?
Angevine:
Yes.
Judge Engelmayer:
Was there a marijuana
odor?
Angevine: No,
honestly. A
sentencing on these violations
was set for first week in
July.
Judge
Engelmayer says "it's my
understanding that at some
point in July the court will
open for non-trial criminal
conferences.... Mr Smallman
will tell you if it's that, or
CourtCall."
He declined to
remand Angevine, citing
COVID-19, and said how he acts
between now and July will mean
something.
The case is US v.
Angevine, 18-cr-108
(Englemayer).
