SDNY COURTHOUSE,
July 11 – Manuel Enrique Yates
was arrested after drug
sniffing dogs indicated
narcotics in his tractor
trailer which had just made a
drop off in The
Bronx.
On July 11, 2022 his jury
trial began before U.S.
District Court for the
Southern District of New York
Judge Naomi Reice Buchwald.
Inner City Press went and
covered it, the only media
(and only person) in the
courtroom gallery.
Yates is representing himself.
Judge Buchwald told the jurors
that what he will say, in
cross examining witnesses, is
not evidence. The docket shows
that Yates moved on August 16,
2021 to fire his CJA counsel.
A new counsel was appointed on
November 19, 2021, then
another on November 29. On
June 22, 2022 his counsel
"withdrew." A Faretta
was held on June 28. And now,
he is representing himself.
The case is US v. Yates,
21-cr-260
(Buchwald).
