SDNY COURTHOUSE,
Aug 14 – Unique Chavis was
arrested on August 5, 2019
with a gun and bags of
marijuana. He has been
detained since. On August 14,
U.S. District Court for the
Southern District of New York
Judge Denise L. Cote held an
in-person sentencing. Inner
City Press covered
it.
Chavis'
Criminal Justice Act lawyer
Anthony Cecutti, both in an
August 7 sentencing submission
and on August 14, argued for a
sentence of Time Served,
citing "the racial traumas he
has sustained along with his
experience of systemic racism
as a young Black
man."
Judge Cote
listened and said but for
COVID-19 she would have
imposed a longer sentence. As
it was and is, she sentenced
Unique Chavis to 36 months and
three years of supervised
release.
This may be
contrasted to a sentence later
in the day for a cooperator, a
sentence which hours later was
and is as of this writing not
in the docket.
The case is US v.
Chavis, 19-cr-620 (Cote)
