SDNY COURTHOUSE,
Sept 20 – Syed Ali Raza, who
immigrated to the US from
Pakistan, was convicted of
wire fraud in 2019. Then he
fled to Canada, and had his
appeal
dismissed.
On September 20 U.S. District
Court for the Southern
District of New York Judge
Lewis A. Kaplan held his
sentencing for Failure to
Appear. Inner City Press
covered it.
Raza said
he fled because he felt his
life was in danger.
The basis was not
explained in the proceeding,
and his sentencing memo was
not in the docket. After some
discussion of whether he
should or would be credited
for his time in jail in
Canada.
Judge Kaplan sentenced Raza to
time served and one year of
supervised release.
Both sides said
he will be deported. But to
where?
The case is US v.
Raza, 20-cr-207 (Kaplan)
