Queens Man Who Put Burning Glove Under NYPD Vehicle Gets Agreed $25K Bail at SDNY

By Matthew Russell Lee, Patreon
BBC - Guardian UK - Honduras - The Source

SDNY COURTHOUSE, June 18 –  After the prosecutors in the Eastern District of New York had arrested and detained three defendants for attacks on NYPD, on June 18 the US Attorney for announced the arrest of Victor A. Sanchez-Santa "in connection with his attempts to destroy a police car in midtown Manhattan."

On June 18 he was released on $25,000 bond co-signed by his mother in a short presentment Inner City Press live-tweeted, here and below.

SDNY U.S. Attorney Geoffrey S. Berman said in a statement, “As alleged, the defendant selected a clearly marked NYPD vehicle, walked up beside it, started a fire under the vehicle, and fled the scene.  In allegedly doing so, he maliciously targeted law enforcement.  Arson is also a threat to more than its immediate victim, with the potential to destroy and terrify far beyond the place where a fire is set.  We have the quick response of members of the NYPD, FDNY, and ATF to thank for controlling the fire and identifying the defendant so he can face the significant charge for his alleged crime."

The SDNY Complaint alleged that on June 9, 2020, at approximately 1:20 am, Sanchez-Santa stopped his car beside a marked NYPD vehicle on West 42nd Street in Manhattan.  He got out of his car, took a cloth glove in his hand and held the glove to a flame until it ignited.  He then put the burning glove underneath the NYPD vehicle, and got back into his car, leaving the glove burning beneath the police car.

Inner City Press, which covered all three EDNY cases, will cover this case in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York. The first step was the presentment, which Inner City Press live tweeted: "The defendant is currently in the custody of U.S. Marshals in 500 Pearl Street... He was arrested at 6:30 am."

He's been assigned Mark Gombiner of Federal Defenders; Judge Cott has his financial affidavit to show eligibility for publicly-funded counsel.

Magistrate Judge James L. Cott: "You are not required to make any statements to the authorities... There is one count of arson."

FD Gombiner: We waives its public reading.

Judge Cott: What about bail?

AUSA: We have agreed to a bail package...Bond of $25,000 cosigned by mother.

[Inner City Press note: EDNY prosecutors sought and ultimate got detention of 3 in Brooklyn, after 2d Circuit appeal. SDNY has agreed to a bail package, $25k bond. Then again it's a burning glove, not the alleged Molotov cocktail. Still, they did a press release.]

FD Gombiner, for preliminary hearing, waives to the 30th day.

The case is US v. Sanchez-Santa, 20-mj-6295 (Cott).
