SDNY COURTROOM
Exclusive, Sept 16 –
In the U.S. District Court for
the Southern District of New
York on September 16, a
detention hearing was held by
Magistrate Judge Ona T. Wang
on defendant Jose Tejada,
arrested that morning trying
to fly to Colombia, charged
with causing at least three
overdose deaths.
Inner City Press
was the only media in the Mag
Court and live tweeted it, here:
Retained counsel
has shown up, in jeans, asks
if the Criminal Justice Act
lawyer is the interpreter. No.
Judge Wang
arrives and asks time if
arrest.

Tejada has
filled out a CJA 23 financial
affidavit. [See Judge Furman's

AUSA:
Seeking detention. CJA: Making
a bail application. He is
employed and could continue if
released. He is willing to
give urine. Travels regularly
to Dominican Republic. Would
agree to GPS.
AUSA Li:
Presumption case, narcotics
resulting in death. Fenanyl

survived. IDed Tejada's cab
service as deliverer. Cabbie

AUSA Li:
Defendant stored photo of news
story about the deaths on his
phone. Police then conducted
controlled buys.
AUSA: Today he
had planned a 1-way trip to
Colombia. Fake Florida license
on his iCloud. Now Tejada
talks with retained lawyer who
has not yet filed his
appearance. CJA switches
places.
CJA: Who cares
about the screenshots? And
what about the hand to hand
seller? Pre-Trial Services
says release him.
RULING: Tejada
will be detained, Judge Wang
decides, citing opioid crisis
and overdose deaths.
Update: this
appears to be the article
Tejada kept a screenshot
of: "2 men in Yonkers
died for overdoses... 3
apparent overdose deaths in
the Bronx's Woodlawn area that
might be connected with the
same cocaine."
And the other two
Bronx-ites?
Inner City
Press can add: Tejada was in a
black t-shirt and sneakers
with a bright green rim. The
retained counsel was in jeans,
no jacket, and did not speak
before Judge Wang. In the back
row were case agents with
handcuffs. There is a
co-defendant, the driver,
being processed in Florida.
The case is US v.
Tejada, 21-mj-8918 (Wang)
