SDNY COURTHOUSE,
Oct 8 – Mario Powell was
charged in 2018 with robbing a
livery cab driver in The Bronx
at gunpoint.
On October 8 U.S.
District Court for the
Southern District of New York
Judge Analisa Torres held a
proceeding. Inner City Press
covered it.
The main
issue discussed was Powell's
mental health. The AUSA quoted
a doctor as saying he might be
malingering, and emphasized
that Powell has three times
attacked prison guards,
including stabbing one with a
handmade weapon.
Judge Torres said
this would not necessarily be
inconsistent with mental
problems. She called
psychiatry a young science and
mentioned a Bureau of Prisons
facility near Washington that
specializes in it.
She agreed
with defense counsel that
another evaluation is needed.
The case is US v. Powell,
18-cr-287 (Torres)
