SDNY COURTROOM,
Nov 24 – In the U.S. District
Court for the Southern
District of New York on the
afternoon of November 24, the
day before Thanksgiving, a
detention proceeding was held
by Magistrate Judge Stuart D.
Aaron on a defendant who had
been arrested in Brooklyn and
released on state charged, but
held on a Federal detainer.
Damon Bignon is
charged with violating his
supervised release, including
by assault while staying in
the CAMBA shelter in Brooklyn.
Inner City Press live tweeted
here:
AUSA says he came
into Federal custody
yesterday.
Defendant speaks
up: No! It was Friday!
"The Government
is seeking detention."
AUSA: No GPS
bracelet could be installed
today.
Judge's clerk
puts in call to verify. Turns
out, GSP bracelet *can* be
installed today
And that
may have made all the
difference. Pending seeing
District Judge Jesse M. Furman
on December 1, Bignon was
ordered released with GPS, set
to "home detention" although
he doesn't have a home. Call
it a Thanksgiving miracle.
Bignon, speaking for himself,
said that he had previously
missed contacting Probation
because just after his last
appearance before Judge Furman
in August, he had his skull
fractured.
This case is US
v. Bignon, 18-cr-783 (Furman /
Aaron)
