SDNY COURTHOUSE,
July 1 – Juan Carlos Aracena
De Jesus had been deported to
the Dominican Republic. Then
his daughter in the United
States begged him to come
back. He did.
On July 1,
U.S. District Court for the
Southern District of New York
Judge Paul A. Engelmayer held
a sentencing. Inner City Press
covered it.
The US
Attorney's Office urged a
Guidelines sentence -- that
is, 30 to 37 months. Judge
Engelmayer called this
position "disappointing." He
cited COVID-19 in the jails,
and the reason for the
defendant's return.
The
Assistant US Attorney, calling
in from Connecticut, countered
that the defendant was
previously found with nine
"bricks" of cocaine and a
gravity
knife.
Judge Engelmayer
sentenced him to one
additional day, for logistics.
He will be deported, again.
The case is US v.
Aracena De Jesus, 20-cr-19
(Engelmayer).
