SDNY COURTHOUSE,
Oct 20 – Tyrell Whitaker was
seventeen years old when he
took part in a robbery of a
marijuana dealer in Newburgh,
New York that resulted in the
shooting death of Jeffrey
Henry.
On
October 20, U.S. District
Court for the Southern
District of New York Judge
Edgardo Ramos held his
sentencing. Inner City Press
covered it.
Probation was
pushing for a life sentence.
Defense lawyer George Goltzer
pilloried the government for
not considering mitigation. He
had arranged for advocates to
address Judge Ramos over the
public call-in line.
He
insisted that his client is
not "irreparable corrupt,"
citing the Second Circuit case
US v. Delgado.
Judge Ramos
agreed. Still, he sentenced
Whitaker to 17 years
imprisonment.
The case is US v.
Whitaker, 12-cr-626 (Ramos)
