SDNY COURTHOUSE,
Sept 10 – Percy Arturo
Vasquez-Drew was arrested in
Panama and extradited to New
York, charged with drug
trafficking. But he is
originally from Bolivia, and
now stands to be deported
there. First, there is the
matter of forfeiture.
On
September 10 U.S. District
Court for the Southern
District of New York Judge
Denise L. Cote heard arguments
about the forfeiture. Inner
City Press covered it.
The US
Attorney's Office went big
picture: "In 2006, Evo Morales
- a former coca farmer and
coca union leader - became
Bolivia's first indigenous
president. Two years later, in
2008, the Bolivian government
expelled the US DEA."
On
September 10, the US sought an
order for $45,000 in
forfeiture.
Vasquez-Drew's
lawyer Sabrina Shroff said
some of his client's boasts
border on the absurd, such as
that he sent his pregnant wife
to Miami to get small
aircrafts with which to
airdrop cocaine throughout
Peru. In fact, it was the
confidential source who had to
pay for Vasquez-Drew's flight
from Bolivia to Panama where
he got arrested.
Shroff wrote,
"According to Google, a flight
from Bolivia to Panama City
costs about $600."
Judge Cote on
September 10 "ordered,
adjudged and decreed that a
money judgment of $45,000
shall be entered against Percy
Arturo Vasquez-Drew."
The case is US v.
Vasquez-Drew, 19-cr-91 (Cote)
