SDNY COURTHOUSE,
Jan 20 –
Beverly Hills Teddy Bear
Company sued Best Brands,
accusing it of violating its
copyright on "Squeezamals,"
which it describes as "low
rise foam stuffed toys
designed to look like sloths,
narwhals or dogs."
On July 17, 2020
U.S. District Court for the
Southern District of New York
Judge Gregory H. Woods held a
proceeding. Inner City Press
covered it.
Back in
June, BHTBC had gotten sealed
two exhibits filed by Best
Brands.
In July,
there was a July 24 letter to
Judge Woods from Morris E.
Cohen "re: Exhibit 7 to
Parties' Joint Letter (Filed
Under Seal)" -- but for SDNY
Press it says, "You do not
have permission to view this
document." Teddy bears as
national security? Inner City
Press monitored a July 28
conference, with questions of
standing and discovery
violations. But why is it all
sealed?
On January 20,
2021 Judge Woods held a
conference, and Inner City
Press again covered it.
GennComm
was discussed;
Judge
Woods has given Best Brands a
one-sided extension of fact
discovery, for the next three
months.
Jump cut to
August 24, 2021: the case has
settled, now the speed of
attorneys fees is the issue.
They will be slightly delayed,
with Judge Woods rulings the
payments of $160,257.04 will
extend to December 15.
The case is
Beverly Hills Teddy Bear
Company v. Best Brands
Consumer Products, Inc. et
al., 19-cv-3766 (Woods)
