SDNY MAG COURT
EXCLUSIVE, March 18- In
the U.S. District Court for
the Southern District of New
York on March 18, a detention
or release proceeding was held
by Magistrate Judge Robert W.
Lehrburger on man from El
Salvador arrested on March 17
with seven firearms brought up
from Tennessee for sale in New
York.
Inner City
Press covers the SDNY
Magistrates Court, sometimes
alone in the gallery, as it
was on March 18. Defendant
Samuel Martinez was assigned
the duty Federal Defender, who
put up an energetic argument
for release on bond.
But it fail.
Judge Lehrburger noted that it
was not one gun but seven, and
that Mr. Martinez is not a
citizen and has an incentive
to flee. The Federal Defender
said he had little incentive
to flee to El Salvador, and
noted wryly that the
masterminds are rarely those
driving through the night to
Tennessee to pick up the guns.
The
preliminary hearing was
tentatively set for April
2.
The case is US v.
Martinez, 22-mj-2639
(Lehrburger)
