SDNY MAG COURT
EXCLUSIVE, Sept 23 - In
the U.S. District Court for
the Southern District of New
York on September 23, a
detention or bond proceedings
was held by Magistrate Judge
Valerie Figueredo. Inner City
Press was there, the only
media in the Mag Court.
The
defendant was Omar Lopez
Castro, previously sentenced
to 11 years for drug
trafficking by SDNY Judge Paul
A. Crotty. After that prison
sentence, he returned to
Puerto Rico - but was arrested
on a new complaint when he
came back up to the US.
The
complaint charges a new and
wider drug trafficking
conspiracy in Puerto Rico. It
relies heavily on a CW-4, who
the defense lawyer identified
in open court as Pedro Guzman.
He called the prosecutors
opportunists, and their
evidence "putrid."
Judge
Figuerdo did not agree. After
a short break and asking about
the sentencing guidelines -
she did not take a position on
career criminal status - she
ordered the defendant
detained, saying that dealing
drugs while on supervised
release is serious.
The case is US v.
Singh, 22-mj-7198 (Figuerdo)
