SDNY MAG COURT
EXCLUSIVE, Sept 27 - In
the U.S. District Court for
the Southern District of New
York on September 27, a
detention or bond proceedings
was held by Magistrate Judge
James L. Cott. Inner City
Press was there, the only
media in the Mag Court.
The
defendant was Juan Lasanta,
charged with being a felon in
possession of a firearm. In
the courtroom gallery were
three supporters, including
one awaiting admission to the
New York Bar.
The Assistant US
Attorney asked for detention,
citing a firearm in the
console of the car registered
to the defendant, as well as
brass knuckles.
The Federal
Defender countered that
Lasanta has found it difficult
after losing his construction
job amid COVID.
Judge Cott after
a break arrived at home
incarceration, with the
girlfriend as third party
custodian. He told her, I hope
Mr. Lasanta doesn't put you in
an uncomfortable position.
Lasanta
was led away by the US
Marshals. He will remain
detained pending a home visit
by pre-trial services, and
verification of two suretors
as financially responsible
people for the $75,000
bond.
The case is US v.
Lasanta, 22-mj-7737(Cott)
