SDNY COURTHOUSE,
May 5 – Samuel Saunders is on
trial for being a felon in
possession of ammunition, to
wit, 9 millimeter
Remington-Peters shell
casings.
On May 5, U.S.
District Court for the
Southern District of New York
Judge Lorna G. Schofield held
a final charging conference.
Inner City Press covered it.
The
Assistant US Attorney said
perhaps the verdict sheet
should only be signed by the
foreperson.
Judge
Schofield said she prefers all
jurors to sign. She asked how
long the AUSA wants for
closing arguments.
An hour and a
half was the answer, including
a 15 minute video.
Judge Schofield
said it would be important
that both sides could close on
the same day, Friday, May 7
and that she would not expect
the jury to reach a verdict
that day.
But in fact, teh
jury did reach a verdict on
May 7: Guilty, signed by all
12 jurors. At 2:55 pm the jury
had sent out a single note,
"requesting help locating the
photo that the prosecutor
showed in his 2nd closing
argument showing a zoomed in
photo of the white patch of
hair of the suspect while
outside (not in the elevator).
It was a split screen of the
man in the elevator and hte
man outside, showing the white
patch of hair in both.. Jury
forman, Juror #6."
By 3:50
pm, the prosecutors were
waiting outside the courtroom
on the 3rd floor, when Inner
City Press went back. Judge
Schofield set Saunders'
sentencing for September 16 at
11 am in her normal courtroom,
1106 in 40 Foley Square.
The case is US v.
Saunders, 19-cr-679
(Schofield)
