SDNY COURTHOUSE,
Nov 27 – On
the afternoon of September 28,
Audrey Strauss, Acting United
States Attorney for the
Southern District of New York,
announced that "PAUL A.
RINFRET was sentenced in
Manhattan federal court today
to 63 months in prison for
participating in a Ponzi
scheme in which he obtained
approximately $19 million in
total from victims through a
variety of lies and
misrepresentations.
RINFRET pled guilty to one
count of wire fraud and one
count of securities fraud on
October 8, 2019, before U.S.
District Judge Gregory H.
Woods, who also imposed
today’s sentence."
What
was not included in the press
release was that the US
Attorney's Office asked for
immediate remand to jail. But
when Judge Woods asked the
basis, if there were any new
facts.
The AUSA
acknowledged no new facts, but
that Rinfrey might now try to
flee.
His lawyer noted
that if he were remanded to
the MCC, quarantine for at
least 14 days would then be
required, including to
whatever facilities he is
assigned to.
Judge
Woods agreed, and allowed for
self-surrender.
The case is US v.
Rinfret, 19-cr-535 (Woods)
