For Gang Violence on 137 Street in The Bronx Caban and Cray Are Detained In SDNY

By Matthew Russell Lee, Patreon
BBC - Guardian UK - Honduras - The Source

SDNY COURTHOUSE, Dec 4 –  On March 7, 2019 a sealed indictment for attempted murder in The Bronx was filed by U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York Magistrate Judge Debra Freeman.

It described a shooting "at gang rivals in the vicinity of East 137th Street and Brown Place in The Bronx, New York, striking an off-duty New York City police officer in the chest."

On December 4, Jose Caban and Corey Cray were presented before SDNY Magistrate Judge Barbara Moses, charged with violent crimes in aid of racketeering.

The US Attorney's Office specified the attack as being on February 9, 2019 and on 137th Street and Willis Avenue; they asked that the two be detained, which their lawyers consented to.

There will be a conference in the case on December 11 before SDNY Judge Valerie Caproni. Back on March 20 with other co-defendants in the case in her courtroom, Judge Caproni told those in the gallery, "Let me just say to the audience, this is a courtroom. You can wave to your friends and family members, you can throw them a kiss, and can do whatever you can to do. Stay in your seat until they have gotten out of the courtroom, and no shouting out. Thank you all."

The case is US v. Avila, et al., 19-cr-166 (Caproni).
