SDNY COURTHOUSE,
Dec 19 – The Federal
courthouse at 40 Foley Square
continues to have two elevator
banks out of service,
including three out of four
leading to the courtroom
floors, leading to the
shifting of cases and whole
court operations of some
judges to the newer courthouse
next door at 500 Pearl Street.
On December 19 Inner City
Press, which reports on cases
in both buildings, went yet
again to cover some cases
still listed as taking place
in 40 Foley. First among them
was the continuation of a
sentencing before Judge Andrew
L. Carter. First Inner City
Press checked Judge Batts
courtroom on the 24th floor of
500 Pearl, to which many Judge
Carter proceedings have been
moved. But it was locked.
Running
over to 40 Foley, waiting five
minutes for an elevator, up on
the 13 floor Judge Carter's
courtroom door was locked. A
sign said all proceedings back
across the street in 18B. But
there, it was dark. Was
defendant Bob King already
sentenced?
Elsewhere in 40 Foley on
December 19, based on a floor
to floor visit by stairs, the
same signs announced Judge
Schofield's cases are in
Courtroom 110 and Judge
Furman's in 11B of 500 Pearl.
There were no signs on the
courtroom doors of Judges
Nathan and Engelmayer.
On the 7th
floor, Judge Oetken's sign
said all cases in 12B, the
same 500 Pearl Street
courtroom where Judge Gardephe
moved his Saab proceeding.
Judge Broderick, now, has
relocated to 15A in 500 Pearl.
Judges Failla and Ramos on the
6th floor, and Judge Caproni
on the fourth, are not
accessible by stairs, at least
not to the public.
Inner City
Press inquired as to why and
how long. The answer was that
the lower rise elevators went
out, and it was decided to fix
both elevators banks at once.
Now there are some budget
rules referred to. But seven
floors of active District
Court courtrooms served by a
single elevator? We'll have
more on this.
For now, there is remains a
"we're all in this together"
spirit, notable about more
usual complaints, from Wall
Street to Turtle Bay. More on
Patreon here.
Inner City Press will continue
on these beats.
