SDNY COURTHOUSE,
May 1 –
The Young Adult Opportunity
Program in the SDNY stands in
contrast to some of the sadder
stories for older defendants
and inmates. Inner City Press
wrote about YAOP here.
But what if a prospect does
not want to join?
On May 1,
2020, one of YAOP's two heads,
Magistrate Judge Sarah
Netburn, held a proceeding
about a previous applicant
Jesica Fernandez. Inner City
Press covered it.
Judge Netburn asked Federal
Defender Christopher Flood if
knew where his client was. He
did not. He said that his
contact information was in
hard copy at the FD office
Duane Street which he had not
visited due to the Coronavirus
lockdown.
Judge
Netburn recounted how Ms.
Fernandez had not completed
the application process and
now, since Released on
Recognizance, might not want
to return to
supervision. Flood
replied that he thought she
had joined the program. But it
was not the case.
Judge Netburn told him to find
his client and file a letter.
The case is US v. Fernandez,
17-cr-416 (Netburn).
