Nigeria In End Run Around MLAT Has Conflicted London Lawyer Grilled in SDNY

By Matthew Russell Lee, Patreon
BBC - Guardian UK - Honduras - ESPN

SDNY COURTHOUSE, Nov 27 – The Federal Republic of Nigeria is working around MLAT and using 28 USC Sec. 1782 to try to get discovery against an entity whose law firm, Kobre & Kim, "has extended an order to employment to a junior lawyer in London who briefly trained with one of Nigeria's outside counsel."

On October 22 U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York Judge Paul A. Engelmayer held a proceeding. Inner City Press covered it.

Judge Engelmayer wanted to know why Kobre & Kim hadn't told him abou the conflict issue sooner. He urged the firm to speak frankly with the prospective or putative employee. Then he asked if Nigeria hasn't blown its credibility with the SDNY.

The case is The Federal Republic of Nigeria et al v. VR ADVISORY SERVICES, LTD. et al., 20-mc-209 (Engelmayer)
